Food allergies (sensitivities) easily masquerade as many illnesses and conditions. You may have occasional or continuous symptoms, become worse after certain meals, or better when not eating.

If you are experiencing a constant, resistant illness, you should consider hidden food sensitivities as the underlying cause. Any bodily system can be affected.

The cardiovascular, digestive, immune, and nervous systems are the most frequently affected. The weakest part of a person's body is the first to show dysfunction. Manifestations of food sensitivities may involve one or multiple systems of the body and result in such responses as the following:

  1. Blood Sugar: diabetes, low-blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
  2. Cardiovascular System: heart palpitations or fluttering, numbness, arrhythmia, poor circulation, high-blood pressure, racing pulse.
  3. Eye, Ear, Nose, Throat: dark circles under the eyes, discoloration or lines under eyes, itchy eyes, blurring vision, discharge from eyes or nose; bleeding or stuffy nose; swollen, dry or tickling throat, hoarseness, sneezing, coughing; ears stop up, ring, buzz, or hurt with repeated bouts of ear infections, impaired hearing, vertigo or dizziness. Meniere's disease is sometimes the result of food sensitivities.
  4. Gastrointestinal Tract: indigestion, cramps, hemorrhoids, cold sores, constipation, vomiting, gas, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, diarrhea, colitis, gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome.
  5. Genitourinary Tract: itching, burning, bed wetting, or frequent, urgent or painful urination.
  6. Immune System: chronic sinus infections, frequent colds and flu, autoimmune diseases, food allergies.
  7. Lymph System: chronic enlargement of lymph glands, especially in the neck.
  8. Musculoskeletal System: legs ache with joint stiffness that appears like arthritis, muscles ache and spasm, muscle stiffness, cramps, twitching muscles, joint problems.
  9. Nervous System and Brain: mood and personality changes, frequent headaches, migraines, anxiety, fainting, insomnia, depression, irritability, psychoses, hyperactivity, attention-deficit syndrome.
  10. Respiratory System: asthma, bronchitis, respiratory infections, wheezing, sinusitis, congestion.
  11. Skin: hives, rash, eczema, itching, acne, sweating, hot or cold flashes, rough-red cheeks, allergic wrinkle on nose, earlobes red and warm to touch.
  12. Miscellaneous: inflammation, mouth breather, sucks thumb, a low-grade fever (99 to 99.8 degrees Fahrenheit), swelling of different parts of the body, heavy sweating not related to exercise, fatigue not helped by rest, marked fluctuations in weight, looks anemic.

According to some recent studies, the incidence of food sensitivity is greater than the incidence of any other type of illness affecting people. By some estimates, 60 percent of the population have unknown food sensitivity or allergies and about 95 percent of these people go undiagnosed. Food sensitivities can be the most puzzling and frustrating cause of illness. Symptoms can be so vague they are dismissed as neurotic in origin. A person who suffers from a multitude of minor, chronic complaints is a candidate for the diagnosis of food sensitivities.

Causes of Allergies

  • Digestive Problems

Food allergies may develop when food stuff is not digested properly because of stomach, gallbladder and pancreas malfunction. Instead of being digested the food ferments. Our clinical experience shows again and again that many food allergies simply vanish once the patient's digestion is normalized with the help of the appropriate digestive supplements by Thorne Research and/or Sanum.

  • Dysbiosis/Abnormal Bowel Flora/Candida

Abnormal bowel flora/candida tends to irritate the intestinal lining. This can lead to increased permeability of the intestinal wall (Leaky Gut Syndrome). Not fully digested food particles can enter the blood stream and cause a variety of allergic reactions. Specific nutritional supplements by Thorne Research and/or Sanum are recommended to help restore normal bowel flora. Go to Dr. Z's Self Evaluation for further on-line help.

  • Hypoglycemia/Low Blood Sugar

If the blood sugar level for some reason is depressed below normal, or if blood sugar levels drop too rapidly, the brain is unable to function appropriately. This can lead to a wide variety of symptoms associated with abnormal nervous system function, including many allergy type reactions. Go to Dr. Z's Self Evaluation for further on-line help.

  • Overexposure to foods

Eating the same or similar foods often can lead to food allergies. The main culprits in the US are wheat, dairy, corn, sugar, and increasingly soy. Read the labels of processed foods. Change of eating habits typically brings on dramatic improvements. For stubborn allergies see Dr. Z for (NAET) Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique.
