Quotes for Your Life
"Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations."
George Bernard Shaw
"Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained."

Origin of the West Nile Virus
The West Nile Virus was first discovered in 1937 by a group of researchers working in the West Nile district of Uganda. With the development of more accurate serological tests in the 1950's, the virus became easier to diagnose, leading to the tracking of outbreaks in various areas. The virus eventually spread to many African countries, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East.

West Nile Virus in the USA
The first human case of West Nile Virus in the United States came during the summer months of 1999 in New York. Since then it has spread to nearly every state in the US, affecting thousands of humans, wildlife, and domestic animals.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention these are the statistics of reported cases for the years 1999 through 2006:
- In 1999, 62 diagnoses and 7 deaths
- In 2000, 21 diagnoses and 2 deaths
- In 2001, 66 diagnoses and 9 deaths
- In 2002, 4156 diagnoses and 284 deaths
- In 2003, 9862 diagnoses and 264 deaths
- In 2004, 2539 diagnoses and 100 deaths
- In 2005, 3000 diagnoses and 119 deaths
- In 2006, 4269 diagnoses and 177 deaths
In 2008 there were 1256 new cases reported with 44 fatalities.
There were 687 cases of encephalitis/meningitis and 624 cases of fever reported. The majority of these cases were in California, Colorado and Arizona.
It is of course unknown how many cases of fever and flu like symptoms remained unreported.

West Nile Virus Transmission
The transmission cycle of West Nile Virus travels from infected birds to mosquitoes (generally of the Culex henus), then on to animals or humans that the mosquitoes bite. The migration of these birds, sometimes spanning great distances, is what causes the epidemic to constantly appear in new areas. Researchers have correlated certain weather patterns to the spread of West Nile. The mosquitoes spreading the virus actually prefer to feed on birds, but when hot, drought-like conditions occur for a two-week period or more, birds tend to fly to cooler areas, causing mosquitoes to prey on either humans or animals.

West Nile Virus Symptoms
Approximately 80% of those infected with the West Nile virus will remain asymptomatic. Of those that do develop symptoms, they are typically flu-like, including fever, headache, body ache, swollen lymph glands, and rash. In these mild cases symptoms generally last 2 to 14 days.
More severe symptoms, such as when West Nile Encephalitis develops, include
- meningitis
- severe headaches
- neck stiffness
- disorientation
- tremors
- convulsions
- coma
- paralysis
occur in less than 1 % of cases and tend to develop in those over the age of 50 or those with compromised immune systems. Approximately 1 person in 1000 dies from the virus.

West Nile Virus Symptoms in Animals and Pets
Although found mainly in birds, West Nile Virus has been identified in other animals such as horses, dogs, cats, bats, chipmunks, skunks, squirrels, and domestic rabbits.
As the West Nile virus multiplies in the animal's system it crosses the blood-brain barrier and eventually resulting in inflammation of the brain. This results in classical neurological symptoms such as neck stiffness, disorientation, tremors, paralysis, coma, balance problems, drooling, excessive salivation, etc.

West Nile Virus Prevention is Key
The surest way to protect yourself from West Nile infection virus is to take preventive measures against mosquito bites. Avoid having any containers around your home where water can collect, creating breeding environments for mosquitoes. Try not to be outdoors around dawn and dusk when mosquito activity is at a peak. If you are outdoors, wear clothing that covers as much skin surface area as possible. Avoid wearing sweet smelling lotions, perfumes, or colognes, as these scents can attract mosquitoes. Do not leave windows or doors open unless there is a protective screen in place.
