Dear friend My best wishes to you for a very Happy and Healthy Christmas Season. Today's Topic: There IS Life WITHOUT SUGAR! Sugar - Children's Brains and High Fructose Corn Syrup There is Danger lurking in many juices and processed foods I enjoy hearing from you. Write to me with your comments and questions.
I make every attempt to answer your e-mails as soon as my busy schedule allows. At times this may take a few days. Please understand and be patient.
"The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, nor to worry about the future, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly." "Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing." "You will come to know that what appears today to be a sacrifice will prove instead to be the greatest investment that you will ever make." "Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood." I get letters (Bolds and Links added by Dr. Z) My son is 3 1/2 years old. Since he was six months old he has suffered from chronic ear infections. The doctors placed tubes in both of his ears. The last episode lasted for two months. Jason was placed on four types of antibiotics, to no avail. It was finally suggested that his adenoids and his tonsils were to be removed surgically. At that point I decided to look at other alternatives. In addition to the ear infections, my son had terrible mood swings, threw constant tantrums. He showed hyperactive and often destructive behavior. He had recurring sinus infections, constant runny nose and black circles under his eyes. A co-worker recommended that I take my son to see Dr. Z. Her seven year old grandson had experienced dramatic improvements in his health under the care of Dr. Z. I took my son to Dr. Z's office on a Friday afternoon. With his unusual muscle testing Dr. Z determined my son way allergic to sugar and basically all carbohydrates. He suggested that Jason's digestion was not working properly, and that he was suffering from candida overgrowth due to his extensive exposure to antibiotics. He recommended that I take him off all carbohydrates and put him on an anti-candida regimen. Needless to say, I was scared to death to face possibly excessive tantrums because of the change of diet. The weekend was very tough. I had a screaming and upset kid. My husband was upset with me trying to change my child's diet. By Tuesday, five days later, I had a new kid. My Jason had turned into a sweet, mellow, loving child. He was open to new food experiences. Now a week and a half later I notice a definite increase in his natural positive energy. Sibling fighting between Jason and his brother has decreased by more than 50%. Now I find them late in the evenings sitting in bed and talking. He was an extremely picky eater before. During the last two weeks he has tried all kinds of new foods. The entire family has benefited from this new approach to foods. We all eat the same. Both Mom and Dad have lost a few pounds. The atmosphere in our house in calm and much more loving. Initially my husband was not supportive, but now he has seen with his own eyes the wonderful changes in his son. He is very excited about that. My son's "ear infections" appear to have vanished. His runny nose is gone. The black circles under his eyes have vastly improved. One day my son was given a piece of cake at school against my clear instructions. He came home a changed boy. He was flipped out and upset and screaming most of the night. These are the clear effects of sugar. Suzanne V., Grass Valley, CA Here is the Account of a Happy Mother My son Grant was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 14 years old. He has since been on either Ritalin or Adderall. Allergies were also a major issue in his life, both with food and the environment. These were noticed around the age of 8. Almost year around, he was on Allegra or Zyrtec. The allergy medication helped, but his nasal passages were constantly swollen. When Grant (now 17) told me that he was depressed and had been for as long as he could remember, I had to do something different. I couldn't imagine putting any more medication in his body. Grant and I decided to stop all of his medication immediately. He started the supplements and the Hypoglycemia/Candida Diet the next day. The first few days were the hardest. I felt like he stayed on the diet 'one meal at a time'. He wanted to quit. Coming off of sugar, refined carbohydrates and medication was rather tough, but he stayed with it. Dr. Z was there to answer questions and to encourage to continue. Sugar Consumption and our Children "Sugar - High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) use has been partially driven by its price, which is well below the price of raw sugar. Corn refiners produce high fructose corn syrup by first converting cornstarch to syrup that is nearly all dextrose. Ninety-percent of high-fructose corn syrup is used by the beverage industry. U.S. sweetener consumption has increased by close to 8 million tons over the last 20 years to a level of approximately 22 million tons in 1999. Sweetener consumption includes sugar, corn sweeteners, honey, maple syrup and other edible syrups, but excludes non-caloric sweeteners. Cane and beet sugar consumption have declined since the early 1980's, as high-fructose corn syrup - HFCS - began to replace these sugars in beverages and some bakery products. The use of cane and beet sugars began to recover and reach an estimated 9.4 million tons in 1999. The per capita consumption of caloric sweeteners increased 22% from 1970 to 1995 and continued to increase to an estimated 158 lb. per person in 1999. According to the U.S. Food Supply Data, Americans'' per capita consumption went from 27 teaspoons of added sugar (108 g) per person per day in 1970 to 32 teaspoons (128 g) per person per day in 1996, which is an increase of 23%. This increased consumption has been driven by the dramatic increase in the supply of corn sweeteners or high-fructose corn syrup. Unlike other nutrients, such as total and saturated fat and sodium, there is no guidance for the consumer as to how much sugar constitutes a moderate amount. In the Food Guide Pyramid, consumers are advised to use sugar ""sparingly"", and this is defined as 6 teaspoons (24 g) for a 1,600-kilocalorie diet; 12 teaspoons (48 g) for a 2,200-kilocalorie diet; and 18 teaspoons (72 g) for a 2,800-kilocalorie diet. The average intake of added sweeteners in the U.S. population in those aged 2 years and older is 20.5 teaspoons (82 g) per day. Most Americans exceed the Food Guide Pyramid recommendations.
Growing evidence links excessive intake of added sugars with undesirable health risks, which include obesity, which can lead to type 2 diabetes mellitus and its complications, which include cardiovascular disease. High levels of added sugars make it difficult to meet micro-nutrients requirements from food alone." "Sugar and Sugars: Myths and Realities," Coulston AM, Johnson RK, J Am Diet Assoc, March 2002;102(3):351-353. Here is an interesting research article on the role of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) in obesity. Some Quotes:
Hepatic metabolism of fructose favors de novo lipogenesis. (fat deposits)
Thus, the increase in consumption of HFCS has a temporal relation to the epidemic of obesity, and the overconsumption of HFCS in calorically sweetened beverages may play a role in the epidemic of obesity. End Quote
Sugars represent empty calories. In other words, processed sugars contain no nutrition,. They actually rob the body of vital vitamins, minerals and enzymes, which the body requires to process these sugars. As many of you know from first hand experience:kids who drink lots of sodas are not hungry. So they often don't want to eat "real" food that has some nutritional value.
Note: The minimum daily requirement of sugar is 0.00 grams (ZERO)! There are many other potentially devastating consequences of high sugar/carbohydrate consumption: hypoglycemia with it's myriad of unpleasant physical and psychological manifestations, allergies and asthma, food allergies and digestive disturbances.
